Your Podcast Experience Will Transform in These 4 Ways in the Next Year

Podcasts have not kept up with the modern listener.

As a podcast-lover and Product Manager, I’m predicting transformations based on how I’d evolve the podcast experience so that I listen twice as much, learn relevant content quickly and make podcasts an even more powerful medium for content creators.

Hosts will no longer say ‘tune in next Wednesday’ to listen to their next episode

ML algorithms will learn that you enjoyed an episode and that you want to know about the next one. Currently, there is a notification system that is effective at capturing 2 seconds of attention, but won’t trigger you to listen to a 15–45 minutes episode.

When you’re ready to engage when you drive, eat lunch or run, you’ll have a prioritised feed of your favourite and relevant content to choose from.

Introductions will be short and rare

You’ll listen to one introduction the first time you listen to a new podcast and you won’t hear it again until (a) you’ve not listened to the podcast for 20+ days or (b) you’ve listened to 10 accumulated hours.

It’s a benefit for hosts who will have an extra minute of time for content and have their introductions be refreshing for listeners rather than obstacles to the episode.

Billing structure will resemble Spotify’s

You’ll pay $4,99/month and get uninterrupted listening of all your podcasts. No more skip forward 15s, + 15s, +15s, agh back -15s. No more compounding subscriptions to 5+ podcasts. You’ll find yourself on a listening highway. Hosts will get an income based on engagement and no longer need to disrupt their flow with advertisements.

Filters will be available for length and relevancy

News podcasts like ‘Up First’ are only hot and current for one day and take 15 mins. ‘Radiolab’ is great when you want to learn something thought-provoking for 30–40 mins. ‘Hardcore History’ will keep an ultra-marathoner entertained for 5-hours. You’ll be able to filter by your available time and needs.
